PHAROAH ANTS

Anatomy of a Pharoah Ant Pharoah Ant

What is a Pharaoh Ant?
The Pharaoh Ant is a tiny ant about 1/10 to 1/16 inch long that nests in warm inaccessible places in buildings. It can only live outdoors in the southern areas of North America; its name is derived from the belief that it was one of the biblical seven plagues of Egypt.

It is found mostly in larger towns and cities, and can become a major pest in apartment buildings, hospitals, nursing homes, groceries and other buildings. The Pharaoh Ant is one of the very few "household ants" that is active year round in heated buildings.

Appearance and Appetite

The Pharaoh Ant’s workers are reddish-yellow, the queen is usually darker red, and males are black. The ants are small in size with well-developed eyes and a narrow waist. This particular ant will eat dead insects, small animals, feed off open wounds, shed human skin, sucrose including sweets and fats.

Pharoah Ant Infestation How do I control a Pharaoh Ant infestation?

The only tested way to ensure that the Pharaoh Ant infestation will not reoccur is to treat for an insecticide around areas where the ants have been most predominate. In addition, an integrated approach is required which will focus on baits containing chemicals, which are safe for humans and with latent toxicity for Ants. Along with correct bait placement it is essential that the highest level of sanitation be maintained.
